Welcome to a magical city walk where we explore Astrid Lindgren's Stockholm — the city that inspired one of Sweden's most beloved writers and her amazing stories.
From the country to the big city
But the journey begins long before she arrived in the capital. Hear about Astrid Lindgren's upbringing on the farm Näs outside Vimmerby, where she grew up with her siblings in a safe, rural environment with her parents Samuel August and Hanna. Here was born her love of storytelling, play and freedom. Astrid was a good student at school and had several close friends — but it was the play that attracted the most. She loved climbing trees, playing Indian and inventing adventures, just as her characters would later do.
We follow her journey to Stockholm, where she had several professions before becoming a writer — journalist, secretary and editor. Hear about how life in the big city shaped her, her passion for jazz, and what it was like to become a single mother at the age of 19. Astrid later had another child, and it was to her daughter Karin that she told one evening about a red-haired girl with freckles — a story that changed children's literature forever.
Astrid's life in Stockholm
The walk takes us through the Atlas Quarter and Vasaparken, where Astrid lived for much of her life and wrote many of her beloved books. We pass Sabbatsberg Hospital and Sinnena's garden, before reaching Tegnérlunden, a place she passed almost daily during 25 years on her way to work. Here you will hear about the boy Bo Vilhelm Olsson, who one day disappeared from our world and became Mio i Mio, my Mio.
Of course, we highlight the characters from her books who have managed to inspire generations of children and young people all over the world!
