Kings & Castles in the Old Townby Vad händer i Sverige

The old town is full of royal trails. During the city walk Kungar & Slott in Gamla stan, participants will follow the story of how power, palaces and everyday life have shaped Stockholm over the centuries.

The walk begins at Riddarhuset, continues through alleys, squares and castle environments and leads up to the story of the old Tre Kronor castle, the fire of 1697 and the emergence of the present Royal Palace. Here the participants meet kings, noble families, reformers and ordinary Stockholmers, all of whom have lived in the shadow of the Crown in different ways.

A living hike for those who want to see the Old Town as more than beautiful facades and cobblestones.

What do you get to experience during the city walk?

The walk begins at the Knight's House, a place where the power of the nobility and the ambitions of the great powers become clear. Here the story begins with how Stockholm emerged as the capital, with new squares, stone houses and buildings created to show order, strength and royal presence.

At Bondesa Palace and Mint Square, participants will hear about the intersecting of royal power, nobility and justice over the centuries. The coin square also becomes a place where the old borders of the city are visible — here the city walls once stood, and here the proximity to the center of power is still felt.

The tour continues into the alleys of Gamla stan, where the world of the court and nobility meets everyday Stockholm. Here, craftsmen, merchants and seafarers lived close to the castle, the church and the city's governing institutions. At Slottsgården, the story of the Three Crowns takes center stage — the old castle that burned down in 1697 and was replaced by today's more austere and European-influenced royal castles.

Between the castle and the Storkyrka there are also stories about Olaus Petri, the oldest room in the city and the old cemetery under his feet. The walk ends at Stortorget, where royal splendour, commerce, everyday life and tragedy have met for hundreds of years.
