What do you get to experience during the city walk?
The walk takes participants through the environments where Carl Michael Bellman lived and worked, a Stockholm of taverns, offices, salons and social life. It tells the story of his life from growing up in the parish of Mary Magdalene to his path to fame as one of Sweden's greatest scoundrels.
Participants will hear about how Bellman first worked in banking and in government, even though numbers were never his strong suit, and how he instead found his real scene among friends, taverns and society of the word. It tells of his remarkable ability to sing, act and portray several people at the same time, which made him an almost unbeatable entertainer. A contemporary witness described how his voice, gestures and playing were so extraordinary that the audience either startled or burst into laughter.
Bellman emerges during the walk both as a national scold and a human being: charming, bohemian, musical, often indebted, but with a rare ability to make Stockholm come alive in words and tone. It's a walking tour where the city streets become the stage for one of Swedish literature's most beloved voices.
